Steam capsule checker
Drop one image and see it at every Steam store and library capsule size: the crop each one gets, the exact pixel size Steam asks for, and a plain warning wherever your art is scaled up or cut. The small capsule is also shown at the size it appears in search results, and you can switch on Steam's discount badge or Free Demo label to see where Steam puts them. Free, no account needed.
Header capsule
920 × 430 pxThe artwork beside your store-page description.
920 × 430Small capsule
462 × 174 pxThe compact image players see in search and store lists.
462 × 174In Steam search results: 120 × 45 px
Your small capsule appears here at its real size. Shown at 100 percent browser zoom; your screen and zoom level change it slightly.
Main capsule
1232 × 706 pxThe large capsule used in the Steam homepage carousel.
1232 × 706Vertical capsule
748 × 896 pxThe portrait placement used on sale and event pages.
748 × 896Library capsule
600 × 900 pxThe portrait artwork players see in their game library.
600 × 900Library header
920 × 430 pxBranding for Recent Games and other library views.
920 × 430Library hero
3840 × 1240 pxWide library background. No text or logo; keep the focal subject centered for smaller windows.
3840 × 1240
The library logo is not previewed: Steam wants your logo on a transparent background, not a crop of your art.
Make every capsule from one image
LaunchKit has a capsule composer that frames your art for all 8 Steam store and library placements, with zoom and a separate logo layer, and saves exact-size PNGs you can download in one ZIP with your store copy. The composer is free. It lives in the LaunchKit workspace that your first page check opens, and that check uses 3 of the 50 free credits a new account gets.
How the checker works
Steam does not crop your art for you: each capsule is its own upload at an exact size. The checker shows what a center crop of one image gives at each of those sizes, which is where most capsule sets start. If a preview cuts off your title or your character, that capsule needs its own framing.
An image smaller than a capsule has to be scaled up, which makes it soft, so export your key art at the largest size you need. The checker does not read text in your image and gives no score; judge the small capsule yourself at its real size.
The sizes are the ones in our Steam capsule size guide, checked against Valve's Steamworks documentation.
Steam's discount badge and Free Demo label
Steam adds a discount badge to your capsule during a sale and a "Free Demo" label to a demo. In Steam's store code both are the same element, and where we could read it, Steam puts it next to your art, not on top of it. The "Show Steam's own labels" switch above draws it only in those places. Valve's Steamworks pages give no position or size for either label; they only ask you not to paint discount text into the art yourself ("No discount marketing copy").
Drawn, with where we read it
- Main capsule: Steam home page capsule rows, under the art and right-aligned. Steam store home page markup (home.js, home.css), read 2026-10-29.
- Header capsule: Steam home page rows such as "From your wishlist", under the art and right-aligned. Steam store home page markup (home.js, home.css), read 2026-10-29.
- Small capsule: Steam search results, at the end of the row beside the art. Steam search results markup (search.css), read 2026-10-29.
In search results Steam draws the small capsule 45 to 70 px tall, depending on the window width. The search preview shows the smallest size, so if your title reads there, it reads everywhere in search.
Not drawn, because we could not verify it
- A badge or demo banner on top of the art. Steam's store code still has an older style that puts the price over the bottom right of the main capsule, but no part of the live home page used it when we read it.
- Next Fest, sale and event pages, and the vertical capsule there. Steam draws these pages with scripts in the browser, so the page markup has no capsule and no label position to verify.
- The library capsule, library header and library hero. The Steam client draws the library, not the store, and Valve documents no label on these images.
