Meshy, Tripo, Rodin or Hunyuan3D character in Unreal Engine 5: the rig routes compared

By the Cosindra team · Updated October 29, 2026

Meshy, Tripo and Rodin can each rig a humanoid, and Hunyuan3D's open models give you a mesh with no rig, but none of them hands you the UE5 Manny skeleton by default, so Manny and Quinn animations need one more step. Tripo (its API's v3.0 rig model) and Rodin (its Rigging API) offer an Unreal skeleton option worth testing on SK_Mannequin. Otherwise keep the generator's rig and retarget with the IK Retargeter, or rig the mesh to the Manny skeleton with RigMaster (15 credits a rig), so Manny, Quinn and the Fab mannequin packs play directly.

Generator facts on this page come from each tool's own docs, pricing pages, license and paper, listed under Sources: Meshy and Tripo read on October 28, 2026 and re-checked on October 29, 2026, Rodin and Hunyuan3D read on October 29, 2026. All four make good meshes; this page is only about the step after the mesh. We build RigMaster, so weigh what we say about it with that in mind.

Why the skeleton decides which animations play

An Unreal animation belongs to a skeleton asset: its bone names, hierarchy and rest orientations. The UE5 Manny skeleton has 89 bones, including five spine bones, two neck bones, paired twist bones on every limb, finger metacarpals and IK helper bones. Epic's locomotion sets, Lyra and the Fab packs built for the UE5 mannequin are made for it. A generator's default skeleton is a different skeleton to Unreal, so those animations need the IK Retargeter before they play on it, while the generator's own clips play fine.

Bone names are only part of compatibility. An "Unreal" option that renames bones may still lack Manny's twist and IK bones or its rest orientations. The quick test for any rig: import the FBX choosing the project's SK_Mannequin as the skeleton and play a Manny clip. If the importer refuses that skeleton or the forearms twist, it is not Manny-compatible.

  • Free UE5 skeleton checker: drop the generator's rigged FBX or GLB to see its bones against Manny's before you open Unreal; nothing is uploaded

Route 1: the generator's rig plus the IK Retargeter

  • Rig the character in the generator and download FBX with the clips you want.
  • Import it into UE5 and let the importer create a new skeleton. Check the height against the default mannequin.
  • Create an IK Rig for that skeleton: retarget root on the hips, chains for the spine, head, both arms and both legs.
  • Create an IK Retargeter from the mannequin's IK Rig to yours, fix the retarget pose until the arms match, and batch-retarget the Manny animations you need. Repeat for every new pack.

Route 2: the generator's Unreal skeleton option

  • Tripo: request the v3.0 rig model with the unreal spec for a biped. The default rig model is v1.0, so ask for v3.0 explicitly.
  • Rodin: send the Rigging request with bone_template human_UE.
  • Import the FBX onto the project's SK_Mannequin and play a Manny clip, a walk and something with arm swing. If it plays cleanly, you are done; if not, fall back to Route 1 or Route 3.
  • Neither generator's docs list the bones these options produce, and we have not run them, so this test is the only way to know.

Route 3: rig the mesh to the Manny skeleton with RigMaster

  • Generate the character in an A-pose (Meshy's Pose setting, Rodin's pose option, or ask for one in a Tripo prompt) and download the textured mesh as GLB, without a rig.
  • Upload it to RigMaster (GLB or glTF up to 100 MB). Very dense meshes get a free reduction in the page, keeping your original.
  • Place the 18 joint markers, or press Suggest markers and check each one. Suggestions work well on realistic and game-proportioned bodies; on chibi or blocky bodies you place the markers yourself.
  • Pick 5, 4 or 3 fingers or Mitten for each hand, and turn on the face rig if you are on a paid plan.
  • Rig it for 15 credits, with 5 free polish rounds, then import the FBX onto SK_Mannequin or use Apply in UE5, which also creates an IK Rig, an IK Retargeter from Manny and a Physics Asset.
  • For Unity or Godot, the finished rig converts free to a Mixamo-named FBX or a Godot humanoid glTF.

Hunyuan3D: a mesh first, then a rig

Hunyuan3D 2.1 is open: Tencent publishes the weights and code, and it makes a textured mesh with PBR materials from an image on your own GPU (Tencent lists about 29 GB of GPU memory for shape and texture together). The open release has no rigging, so a Hunyuan3D character goes through Mixamo, AccuRIG, RigMaster or Blender before it moves.

Tencent's Hunyuan3D Studio paper (arXiv 2509.12815, September 2025) describes an animation module for its hosted platform: humanoids are rigged on a template of 22 body joints after a pose step that turns the model into a T-pose. The hosted site did not load for us logged out, so we cannot say what it offers today.

Read the license before you ship. The Tencent Hunyuan 3D 2.1 Community License says it does not apply in the European Union, the United Kingdom and South Korea, and that the works and their output must not be used outside its territory. If you or your players are there, ask a lawyer before a Hunyuan3D character goes into a game you sell.

Fingers, face and the parts generators skip

  • Fingers: a rig can only bend fingers the mesh separates. Generated hands often come out fused; RigMaster rigs a fused hand as a mitten that bends at the wrist. If your game needs a grip, ask the generator for open hands with gaps, or separate the fingers in Blender first.
  • Face: Meshy's docs send facial bones to Blender or Maya, Rodin has ChatAvatar for expressions, and RigMaster's paid face rig adds a jaw, plus eyes and eyelids where the mesh has eyeballs and lids.
  • Hair, capes and tails: by default RigMaster moves them with the bone they hang from; its Hair & cloth chains option adds bones along the parts that hang, for Unreal's dynamics. Tripo and Rodin have creature rigs if the tail is a real limb.
  • Weapons: generate them as separate props and attach them in Unreal to a socket rather than rigging them into the hand.

Honest limits

  • RigMaster rigs humanoids only. For quadrupeds, dragons, snakes and other creatures, the generators' own creature rigs or Blender are the right tools.
  • RigMaster has no animation library of its own; Manny packs and MotionSmith motions play on its rig. If Meshy's 600+ presets or the other generators' clips are what you want, keep their rig.
  • No rigger repairs bad input. Fused limbs, holes and a mid-pose character rig badly everywhere.
  • Auto-rigged generated meshes suit prototypes, NPCs and jams. A hero character close to the camera may still want weight cleanup by hand.
  • These tools change their features and prices often. The facts here are from their pages on the dates above.

Frequently asked questions

Do Meshy, Tripo, Rodin or Hunyuan3D export to the UE5 Manny skeleton?

Not by default. Meshy downloads with a Mixamo skeleton template, Tripo uses its own bone names and Rodin its human template, and Hunyuan3D's open models do not rig. Tripo's API (unreal naming, v3.0 rig model) and Rodin's Rigging API (human_UE) offer Unreal options; test either on SK_Mannequin with a Manny clip.

Which generator is best for a character I want to animate in UE5?

Pick the one whose mesh you like; the rig step is similar for all of them. Meshy rigs for 0 credits in its web app and has 600+ presets, Tripo and Rodin have the most creature rig types and an Unreal option in their APIs, and Hunyuan3D is free to run on your own GPU but does not rig. For Manny animations, the deciding step is the same either way: retarget, or rig the mesh to Manny.

Do generated characters get finger bones?

Only where the generator says so and the mesh separates the fingers. None of Meshy, Tripo or Rodin documents finger bones, and the Hunyuan3D Studio paper describes 22 body joints. RigMaster lets you pick 5, 4 or 3 fingers or a mitten per hand; a fused hand rigs as a mitten.

Can I sell a game with a Hunyuan3D character?

Read the Tencent Hunyuan 3D 2.1 Community License first. It does not apply in the European Union, the United Kingdom or South Korea, and it bars using the works or their output outside its territory. This is a summary, not legal advice.

How do I rig a generated creature for Unreal Engine 5?

Use a rigger that handles creatures: Meshy's Quadruped Dog or Smart Rig (Beta), Tripo's quadruped, avian, serpentine and other rig types, or Rodin's quadruped, bird, dragon and kaiju templates. For full control, rig it by hand in Blender. RigMaster and Mixamo rig humanoids only.

Is Cosindra free, and what does RigMaster cost?

Yes, you can start free with no card. The Starter plan gives 30 credits every month, and eligible new accounts also get 50 one-time signup credits. A rig costs 15 credits and includes 5 free polish rounds, so the 80 credits of a new account's first month cover 5 rigs. Starter includes one free download, shared across products, and Apply in UE5 through the free desktop app is never download-locked. More downloads come with a paid plan (from $9.99 a month for 150 credits) or a one-time credit pack ($5 for 50 credits, $10 for 100 or $20 for 200), whose credits never expire and which opens downloads for 15 to 30 days. The face rig is a paid-plan feature.
