How to Write a Steam Short Description (With a Formula)
By the Cosindra team · Updated July 26, 2026
The short description sits directly under your header capsule — it’s the first full sentence anyone reads about your game, it shows up in embeds and hover cards, and you get about 300 characters. Most pages waste it on mood copy that could describe a hundred other games.
The job of the short description is narrow: tell a stranger what kind of game this is and why it’s interesting, fast enough that they scroll down instead of hitting back.
The formula
Genre + core fantasy + the twist that makes it yours. Lead with the genre words your audience scans for, spend the middle on what the player actually does, and end on the hook that separates you from the other games in your tag.
A shape that works: "[Genre] where you [core action]. [The twist or stakes]." Two or three tight sentences. If the genre isn’t obvious within the first ten words, rewrite.
Example: vague vs. concrete
Vague: "Embark on an unforgettable journey through a world full of mystery, danger and adventure. Will you survive?" — this could be any game ever made, and tells the reader nothing.
Concrete: "A roguelike deckbuilder where your cards are the crew of a doomed submarine. Every dive rewrites the deck — and whoever drowns stays drowned." — genre in the first six words, a mechanic, a hook, stakes.
Cut these words
- "Epic", "unforgettable", "immersive", "stunning" — filler that carries zero information.
- Rhetorical questions ("Do you have what it takes?") — they spend characters without answering the reader’s actual question.
- Feature counts ("40+ weapons, 100+ levels") — save them for the long description; the short description sells the fantasy, not the spreadsheet.
- Your studio’s name and award list — nobody wishlists a studio.
Test it like a stranger
Read only your short description to someone who’s never seen the game and ask them two questions: what genre is it, and what makes it different? If either answer is wrong or missing, the description isn’t done. For a structured second opinion, run your page through a grader — the description score in LaunchKit checks exactly this: genre-first, concrete, hook up front.

How long can a Steam short description be?
The field allows roughly 300 characters. You don’t have to use them all — two or three sharp sentences beat a maxed-out paragraph.
