How to Make a Rocky Coastline Environment in UE5
A coast is two systems arguing: the sea is flat and patient, the land is stubborn, and cliffs are the negotiation. The playable moment is the transition — cliff top, a way down, a cove at the waterline.
Layer by layer
Terrain
Raise the coastal shelf high, then cut the face steep and blocky: Flatten at stepped heights for terraces, Noise to fracture them. Smooth ramps read as grassy dunes, not cliffs. Carve one cove for access to the water.
Surface layers
Layered rock on the faces, short windswept grass on the tops, pebbles and wet sand in the cove. Darken the albedo and drop the roughness in the tide band — that wet stripe where sea meets rock is what makes a shore look alive.
Vegetation
Wind-bent shrubs and tough grasses along the clifftop edge, almost nothing on the faces. The bareness of the rock is the subject; vegetation just frames it.
Light & atmosphere
A Water Body Ocean with enough wave height that the swell visibly works against the rocks, plus a touch of Exponential Height Fog as salt haze. Overcast reads brooding, golden hour reads romantic — the cliff geometry carries both.
