How to Make a Wood Planks Material in UE5
Wood planks live or die on grain direction and per-plank variation. A plank texture where every board is the same tone reads as laminate flooring; real wood alternates warm and cool boards and breaks the grain at every seam.
Channel by channel
Base color
Warm browns with clear per-plank tonal shifts and visible grain figure. Keep ambient occlusion OUT of the albedo — dark seams belong to the AO/normal, or lighting will double-darken them.
Roughness
Raw or weathered wood is high (0.7–0.9); varnished floors drop to 0.3–0.5 with wear-path variation. Grain should faintly modulate roughness — polish sits on the ridges differently than the valleys.
Metallic
0.0 always. Wood is the textbook dielectric.
Normal
Two scales: deep plank seams and knots, plus fine grain ridging. The seams matter most — they carry the tiling rhythm and catch light at grazing angles.
The hand-building tip that matters
Tile the texture with a TexCoord node and stretch the UV tiling along the grain direction (e.g. 1×4 rather than 4×4) — square-tiled plank textures are the most common giveaway of a rushed material.
