Cosindra for VS Code
Extension 0.1.0 · Unreal Engine 5.7–5.8 · Last updated 2026-09-07
The Cosindra extension turns VS Code into a control surface for your open Unreal Engine editor. Install it from the Visual Studio Marketplace, sign in, point it at your .uproject, and the AI agent you already use in VS Code can spawn actors, wire Blueprint graphs, build materials and read the Output Log through 300+ editor tools.
Nothing about your project leaves the machine. The extension runs a small local server, installs the prebuilt CosindraMCP plugin into the project, and registers that server with VS Code as an MCP server. Your agent talks to it locally.

Set-up, step by step
- 01
Install the extension
Search for "Cosindra" in the Extensions view, or use the Marketplace button above. A Cosindra icon appears in the activity bar.
- 02
Sign in
Open the Cosindra panel and sign in with your account, by password or with Google or GitHub. Signing in is also what downloads the local server for your platform.
- 03
Set up your project
Click Set up project. The extension finds the .uproject in your workspace (or asks which one), installs the prebuilt plugin for its engine version and offers to open the editor. No compiler, no rebuild.
- 04
Ask your agent
In Copilot agent mode, the Unreal tools are already there. Ask for something in your open level and watch it happen in the editor.
How VS Code agents get the tools
VS Code has a native way for extensions to register MCP servers. Cosindra uses it, so GitHub Copilot agent mode lists the Unreal tools without any configuration file. If the local server restarts on a different port, the registration keeps working, because VS Code launches a small launcher command rather than remembering a port.
Claude Code and Codex are terminal agents and read their own configuration, not VS Code's. The panel has one action for them, Connect Claude Code or Codex, which offers to write the MCP entry into the project's .mcp.json (Claude Code) or shows the exact entry for Codex. It always asks before writing.
What the agent can do once connected
The same 300+ editor tools the Cosindra desktop app uses: actors and components, Blueprint graphs and compilation, materials, Enhanced Input, UMG, animation set-up, Play-In-Editor control and Output Log reading. Calls execute live in your open editor.

Common questions
Which VS Code version do I need?
VS Code 1.101 or newer, on Windows x64 or Apple Silicon macOS. VS Code Insiders works too.
Does it work with GitHub Copilot?
Yes. Copilot agent mode sees the Cosindra MCP server as soon as the extension is set up. Ask mode does not call tools, so switch to agent mode.
Do I need the Cosindra desktop app as well?
No. The extension runs the same local server the desktop app runs. If both are installed they share one server and one editor session rather than fighting over it.
Is the extension free?
Installing it is free. Driving Unreal from an external AI agent needs a paid plan or the ten-day trial every new account gets without a card.
Something not connecting? The extension docs cover where files go, how to read the Cosindra output channel and what to send us.
