How to Make a Misty Valley Environment in UE5

Layer by layer

Terrain

A valley is two moves — raise both sides, run one floor between them — plus the detail that matters: side spurs off the main ridges, so multiple silhouettes overlap in any given view. Overlapping silhouettes are exactly what fog separates.

Surface layers

Simple: grass floor, forested slopes, rock crests. The fog will eat micro-detail anyway, so spend the effort on big value contrasts between the layers, not on texture variation.

Vegetation

Pines banked on the slopes in clumps with deliberate gaps — fog needs gaps to pour through. Keep the valley floor mostly open, with a treeline that frames the river flat.

Light & atmosphere
