How to Make a Sci-Fi Panel Material in UE5
The sci-fi panel is game-art’s bread and butter: a metal or composite plate divided by purposeful seams, greebles and the occasional emissive accent. Its realism comes from manufacturing logic — every line should look like it was designed, not scattered.
Channel by channel
Base color
Desaturated base (gunmetal, off-white or painted color) with panel-to-panel tonal shifts and grime concentrated along seams and bolt heads. Add wear on edges where the panel would be touched or bumped.
Roughness
Mid (0.3–0.6) with strong utility variation: bare metal scratches glossier, painted faces flatter, grime rougher. Roughness variation is where a panel stops looking like plastic.
Metallic
Split by design: exposed metal 1.0, painted or composite sections 0.0. The metal/paint mask is the material’s backbone.
Normal
Beveled seam lines, recessed screws, subtle plate warping. Crisp bevels catch highlights and define the tech language — this is the channel that makes the panel.
