Best Tools for Indie Game Assets in 2026, With a Free Pick for Each Job

Last updated 2026-11-02 · Written by the Cosindra team; see the disclosure below.

The best tools for indie game assets in 2026 depend on the job, and every job below has a free pick. Blender (free and open source) for modelling and rigging by hand; Mixamo or AccuRIG for rigging a humanoid; Poly Haven and ambientCG for CC0 materials; Gaea Community for terrain; Quaternius' CC0 animation library or Rokoko's free text to motion for animation; KayKit's CC0 characters as a starting cast; and the free Steam Capsule Checker for store art. Paid picks buy speed: Adobe Substance 3D for materials, Meshy or Tripo for generated models, and Cosindra's workspaces for output made for your engine from one credit wallet.

Disclosure: we build Cosindra, and five of its workspaces (RigMaster, MotionSmith, MaterialForge, WorldWeaver and LaunchKit) appear below. This page covers 3D characters and props, rigging, animation, materials, terrain and the Steam page, not 2D art or audio. Prices were read on the official pages on November 2, 2026; other facts about other tools are as of October 2026, so check each site before you decide.

Is it free and what does it cost?

Cosindra is free to start with no card: the Starter plan gives 30 credits a month, eligible new accounts also get 50 one-time signup credits, and Starter includes one free download shared across products. Paid plans start at $9.99 a month (BYOK, 150 credits a month), and one-time credit packs cost $5 for 50 credits, $10 for 100 or $20 for 200, with credits that never expire. For the others: Blender is free and open source software; Mixamo's own site offers "Sign Up for Free" (read November 1, 2026); Reallusion calls AccuRIG "a free software"; Gaea has a free Community edition for non-commercial use, and Gaea Indie is $99 one-time for a perpetual license; World Machine's Basic edition costs nothing for non-commercial, personal or educational projects, and the Indie edition is $119 one-time with a year of updates; the Adobe Substance 3D Collection, which includes Sampler, is US$59.99 a month with a 30-day free trial; Rokoko's Starter plan is $0 and includes text to motion, with 5 clips a month imported into Rokoko Studio; Basic is $12 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly (official pages, read November 2, 2026). Poly Haven, ambientCG, Quaternius and KayKit publish free CC0 assets; for Meshy and Tripo, see their pricing pages below.

Which tool for which job

  • 3D characters and props

Meshy and Tripo make a 3D model from text or an image; check their free plans first, since Meshy's Free plan models are CC BY 4.0 and Tripo's Free plan is non-commercial (read October 28, 2026). Blender is the free way to model by hand, and KayKit's CC0 packs are a free starting cast. Meshy, Tripo, Rodin and Hunyuan3D compared

  • Rigging a humanoid

Mixamo (browser) and AccuRIG (desktop) rig humanoids for free; RigMaster rigs one to the UE5 Manny skeleton for 15 credits and converts it free to a Mixamo-named FBX or a Godot glTF; Blender rigs anything by hand. Mixamo alternatives compared

  • Character animation

Quaternius' Universal Animation Library is CC0, Mixamo has a free library and Rokoko offers free text to motion; MotionSmith turns one sentence into 4 takes on the UE5 Manny skeleton, with GLB for Godot and Blender and no Unity export yet. MotionSmith

  • PBR materials

Poly Haven and ambientCG give CC0 materials for free and Adobe Substance 3D is the professional pipeline; MaterialForge makes a tileable PBR set from a description for 4 credits, with Unreal, Unity HDRP and OpenGL downloads. PBR material from text

  • Terrain

Gaea's Community edition is free and World Machine's Basic edition is free for non-commercial work; WorldWeaver turns a written brief into terrain for Unreal, Unity, Godot and Blender for 6 credits a world, with a free Brief Check first. Heightmap to Unreal Landscape

  • The Steam page

The free Steam Capsule Checker shows your art at every Steam capsule size with no account, and Steam Page Analyzer is a free reviewer; LaunchKit grades the whole store page and lists fixes for 3 credits. LaunchKit

Characters and props: model, take or generate

Blender is free and open source and does everything from modelling to rigging; the cost is the time to learn it. For a free starting cast, KayKit's Adventurers pack is CC0: its license allows commercial use and does not require credit. Quaternius' Universal Animation Library is CC0 too; it is the library we used to test our Godot rig.

Meshy and Tripo generate a 3D model from text or an image, which is the quick way to fill a scene with props. Read the free plan terms before you ship: Meshy's Free plan models are CC BY 4.0 and Tripo's Free plan is for non-commercial use, as read on October 28, 2026. Both can also rig a humanoid, but not to the UE5 Manny skeleton by default.

Rigging and animation

Mixamo rigs a humanoid in the browser, free with an Adobe account, and comes with a large free animation library; AccuRIG is a free desktop rigger known for strong hands. Both rig to their own skeletons, so animations made for another skeleton need retargeting. Blender rigs anything by hand, including creatures, and Auto-Rig Pro is a paid Blender add-on for the same job.

RigMaster (ours) is deterministic, not AI: you place 18 joint markers and it fits the UE5 Manny skeleton, so Manny and Quinn animations play with no retargeting. For Unity and Godot it converts the rig free to a Mixamo-named FBX (its Unity Humanoid mapping is not yet tested) or a Godot glTF (tested in Godot 4.7.2). For animation, MotionSmith turns a sentence into 4 takes and exports an FBX on Manny with root motion, or GLB for Godot and Blender; it has no Unity export yet. Rokoko's text to motion is free, and Cascadeur is a paid animation tool.

Materials and terrain

Poly Haven and ambientCG are the free answer for materials: free CC0 material libraries. Adobe Substance 3D is the professional pipeline if you author materials yourself. MaterialForge (ours) makes a tileable PBR set and an Unreal material recipe from a description, with downloads for Unreal, Unity HDRP and OpenGL tools such as Blender and Godot.

For terrain, Gaea's free Community edition is the place to learn, and World Machine's Basic edition is free for non-commercial work; World Creator is the other established paid tool. WorldWeaver (ours) turns a written brief into a terrain foundation with routes and sites, exported as a Landscape heightmap for Unreal or packs for Unity, Godot and Blender.

The Steam page

Store art is an asset too. The Steam Capsule Checker (ours, free, no account) shows one image at every Steam capsule size in your browser, and Steam Page Analyzer is a free page reviewer. LaunchKit (ours) grades the whole store page, or a draft before it goes live, and lists specific fixes; an analysis costs 3 credits.

Honest limits of each pick

Free libraries only have what someone already made, so a game with its own look outgrows them. Blender, Gaea and World Machine take real time to learn. Meshy and Tripo free plans come with license limits, and their rigs are not the UE5 Manny skeleton. Mixamo and AccuRIG rig humanoids only, to skeletons of their own.

Cosindra's limits: RigMaster and MotionSmith are for humanoid characters; MotionSmith has no Unity export yet; RigMaster's Unity FBX is not yet tested with Unity's Humanoid mapping; WorldWeaver gives a foundation with greybox sites, not finished art; there is no Cosindra workspace for 2D art or audio. Starter includes one free download, shared across products. More downloads come with a paid plan (from $9.99 a month for 150 credits) or a one-time credit pack ($5 for 50 credits, $10 for 100 or $20 for 200), whose credits never expire and which opens downloads for 15 to 30 days.

Poly Haven, ambientCG, Quaternius and KayKit publish free CC0 assets; for Meshy and Tripo, see their pricing pages below.

What are the best free tools for indie game assets?

Blender for modelling and rigging by hand, Mixamo and AccuRIG for rigging a humanoid, Poly Haven and ambientCG for CC0 materials, Gaea Community for terrain, Quaternius' CC0 animation library and Rokoko's free text to motion for animation, KayKit's CC0 packs for characters, and the free Steam Capsule Checker for store art.

Can I use these assets in a commercial game?

Check each license. KayKit's Adventurers pack is CC0 and allows commercial use without credit; Poly Haven, ambientCG and Quaternius publish CC0 assets too. Meshy's Free plan models are CC BY 4.0 and Tripo's Free plan is non-commercial (read October 28, 2026). Cosindra's results can be used in commercial projects on every plan, including the free Starter plan.

Which of these tools work for Unity, Godot and Blender?

Blender, Gaea, World Machine and the CC0 libraries make files any engine reads. In Cosindra, WorldWeaver and MaterialForge export for Unity, Godot and Blender; RigMaster converts its rig to a Mixamo-named FBX for Unity (Humanoid mapping not yet tested) and a Godot glTF (tested in Godot 4.7.2, all 17 required bones map with Fix Silhouette on); MotionSmith exports GLB for Godot and Blender, not Unity.

Is Cosindra free?

Yes, you can start free with no card. The Starter plan gives 30 credits every month, and eligible new accounts also get 50 one-time signup credits. No credits are needed for installing Cosindra Desktop and its Unreal plugin, WorldWeaver's Brief Check, BlueprintStudio's planning step, RigMaster's 5 polish rounds after each rig, MaterialForge's Adjust, a verified account's first MaterialForge repaint or watching the MotionSmith gallery (10 of its motions download free). Generations cost credits: a rig 15, a Blueprint graph 10, a world 6, a material 4, a MotionSmith prompt 5 and a LaunchKit analysis 3. Starter includes one lifetime free download, shared across products. More downloads come with a paid plan (from $9.99 a month for 150 credits) or a one-time credit pack ($5 for 50 credits, $10 for 100 or $20 for 200), whose credits never expire and which opens downloads for 15 to 30 days.
