How to Make a Marble Material in UE5
Marble is veins plus depth: mineral seams wandering through a polished translucent stone. The polish is easy; the sense that the veins sit INSIDE the stone rather than printed on top is what separates convincing marble from bathroom laminate.
Channel by channel
Base color
Near-white warm base with grey-to-gold veins in branching, diagonal networks. Veins should vary in width and intensity — evenly-spaced veins are the procedural giveaway.
Roughness
Polished marble low (0.1–0.25) with subtle smudge/wear variation; honed (matte) finishes sit around 0.5. Veins can run a touch glossier than the field.
Metallic
0.0.
Normal
Almost flat for polished slabs — at most micro-pitting. Save real relief for carved or weathered marble; a bumpy polished floor contradicts itself.
The hand-building tip that matters
Add a faint Fresnel-driven brightening at grazing angles and, if available, a whisper of subsurface — marble transmits light at its edges, and that soft edge glow is the "real stone" tell.
