How to Make a Sand Material in UE5
Sand’s character is macro shape plus micro sparkle: dune-scale ripples you can see across a beach, and a faint glitter from individual grains catching the sun. Most sand materials fail by having neither — just yellow noise.
Channel by channel
Base color
Warm tan with LOW contrast — sand is remarkably uniform in color. Dampness is the main variation: wet sand drops several shades darker with a hard edge at the waterline.
Roughness
Dry sand very high (0.85–1.0); wet sand much lower (0.3–0.5). The dry/wet roughness split does more for a beach scene than any color change.
Metallic
0.0.
Normal
Wind ripples as the dominant feature — long, parallel, softly asymmetric waves — plus fine grain noise. Ripples should align with a consistent wind direction across the whole surface.
The hand-building tip that matters
Fake the grain sparkle with a very high-frequency noise driving tiny bright specks in roughness (near 0.0 points on a rough field) — scattered micro-glints at sunset angles are what make sand feel granular rather than clay-like.
